Image Upload

This Section Has Three Parts: 1) Uploading an Image 2) Menu Image Upload 3) Uploading a Zip File

Uploading an Image

1) First go to your main maintenance page, http://www.yourdomain.com/maint. Click on "Store Maintenace", then "Upload Images".

2) You need to click inside the box to place your cursor in the box (it will look like an I-beam), and then click Browse.
Find File

3) A window to your hard drive will open. It will not look exactly like this one. You will need to find the image you would like to upload, highlight it and click "open". Hint: Use the drop down arrow next to the "Look In" box to show a directory of your hard disk. Please note that you can only upload a image that is either a "gif" or a "jpg" into your store.

Find the File on your Hard Disk

4) The name of the file will appear in the box, simply click on "Upload Item's Image" to upload the file. IMPORTANT NOTE: The name of the image file must contain ONLY letters, numbers, and/or the underscore character. It should be all small letters and contain NO SPACES.

File Name

5) Your image will then be uploaded to the server. This can take a short amount of time depending on the size of your image. If your image does not upload in a reasonable length of time, or if you get an error, it is probably because your image is too large. Return to the help file on Scanning for tips on how to reduce the size of your image.

6) Do not move on to another task before the image is uploaded. Your screen will look something like this when you are done. The software will show the name of the image name file it has received, in this case 0102_a.jpg. You will need to know this exact name when entering this item into the database.

6) Now we're ready to enter the item. Click on "Store Maintenance", then "Database Maintenance".

Menu Image Upload

This is for uploading the image you want to appear on the menu. Typically, you would pick one of the items in the category (your favorite) and use that image for that category on the menu page. Here's how it's done:

1) You need to click inside the box to place your cursor in the box (it will look like an I-beam), and then click Browse.

2) A window to your hard drive will open.

4) The name of the file will appear in the box. You need to select the category that this image is for from the drop down list. Since I only have one category so far, "batiks_main" shows as the only entry. Then, simply click on "Upload Menu Thumbnail" to upload the file.

Menu Image Upload

5) Your image will then be uploaded to the server. This can take a short amount of time depending on the size of your image. If your image does not upload in a reasonable length of time, or if you get an error, it is probably because your image is too large. Return to the help file on Scanning for tips on how to reduce the size of your image.

6) Do not move on to another task before the image is uploaded. Your screen will look something like this when you are done. The software will now show the name of the image name file it has received, and this time it is named for the category (batiks_main) with an "m" after it, denoting that it is a menu image. You don't need to remember this one, as it has filled it in automatically for you.

Uploading a Zip file

Zip File Upload

This feature will allow multiple files to be put together in a zip file using pkzip, Winzip, or any of the programs that make a .zip format file. If you do not have a zip utility, then I would recommend Winzip, which you can download at
www.winzip.com

The Upload Images maintenance section now has an option for uploading zip files. To use it, first zip your files, then follow the same steps as above for locating the zip file on your hard disk using the browse button, then click on "Upload & Install Zip File".The zip file will be unzipped on the server and the image files placed in your cgi-images directory.

There are some limitations to uploading the zip file, the primary one being file size. Most of you have 56K connections, which have a maximum upload speed of 33K, but in reality you should not expect reliable connections much greater than 28K. A web browser times out after about 3 minutes. Assuming that you have a good 28K upload speed, then the connection would transfer about 2.8K bytes per second. If your browser times out at 3 minutes, then you would have a theoretical maximum of about a 500K file. I would not recommend making the files over about 300K, which is about 10-30K files. If you get a time out error during upload then you will need to reduce the file size.

The zip file upload program will not display the images that are uploaded, but it will give you a list of the files.
